Course content / topics (15 hours)
1. Introduction to scientific writing and international publishing (2 hours)
The role of academic publishing in doctoral research and academic careers; expectations of international journals; overview of the publication landscape.
2. Structure and logic of a research article (2 hours)
IMRaD structure and disciplinary variations; coherence, argumentation, and positioning the contribution.
3. Academic writing in English: style, clarity, and argumentation (2 hours)
Academic tone and register; clarity and precision in writing; common linguistic and rhetorical issues in manuscripts.
4. Ethics and integrity in academic publishing (2 hours)
Plagiarism, self-plagiarism, authorship and co-authorship; ethical standards and responsibilities of authors.
5. Journal selection and submission strategies (2 hours)
Identifying suitable journals; aims and scope; avoiding predatory publishing; understanding journal guidelines.
6. Peer review process and responding to reviewers (2 hours)
Types of peer review; interpreting reviewers’ comments; preparing revision letters and resubmissions.
7. Visibility, impact, and open science practices (2 hours)
Research visibility, citation practices, bibliometrics; Open Access models; dissemination strategies.
8. Review session and consultation (1 hour)
Summary of key issues; discussion of participants’ questions; consultation on individual publication plans.

Assessment criteria
Assessment is based on continuous evaluation of doctoral candidates’ work throughout the course. The final grade is determined by the total number of points obtained for: completion of in-class tasks and exercises, active participation in discussions, and completion of assigned written tasks. Assessment criteria include engagement in course activities, quality and clarity of written work, adherence to academic writing and ethical standards, and the ability to critically reflect on the publishing process.
