Research methods in linguistics 340-AR1-3MBJ
Students are familiarised with the main methods and research procedures used in linguistics, with an emphasis currently used in language description. The seminar aims to improve students' ability to understand research texts which exemplify the methods discussed as well as to take a critical stance concerning the choice made by the authors of those texts. The course also involves carrying out a small-scale study and writing a report on it.

KA6_WG1 phenomena, processes and language systems and theories explaining the relationships between them
KA6_WG4 general terminology and the basic apparatus of research methodology in the field of linguistics
KA6_WG6 methods of analysis and interpretation of texts and other cultural products of a given language area within selected traditions and theories and linguistics
KA6_UW1 formulate and solve complex problems, selecting appropriate methods and tools using knowledge from the field of language science and translation studies
KA6_UW7 properly select sources and information from them in the field of linguistics and evaluate, critically analyze and synthesize this information
KA6_UK1 communicate using specialist terminology from the field of linguistics and translation studies, taking into account socio-cultural elements
KA6_UK4 participate in a debate in a foreign language, present and evaluate different opinions and positions and discuss them
KA6_KK1 critically evaluate the knowledge held
Assessment criteria
The course is graded. The grading criteria include attendance, active participation in the course, a presentation and a final research project.
One unexcused absence per semester is allowed. If the number of absences is exceeded, the student must attend a meeting with the teacher during their office hours, during which they answer questions related to the content covered when the absence occurred.
