Intruduction to Cultural Studies 340-AS1-1ICS
A lecture introducing the basic issues and concepts of cultural sciences. The course opens with issues related to genealogy, ways of defining and classifying culture. An important topic of considerations is the development of the concept of culture in the area of socio-cultural anthropology and philosophical reflection on culture within the humanities. The subject of the lecture will be various concepts of the development and research of culture, including the problem of the methodology of research in popular and audiovisual culture and the issue of the complexity of cultural processes subject to the logic of globalization.

During the course, students learn about the importance of cultural studies in the system of cultural sciences and humanities; gain the elementary terminological and conceptual apparatus necessary for a cultural expert. They learn about the history of the concept of culture and the basic definitions of culture, in order to prepare the audience to make their own attempts to define culture and cultural phenomena. Students learn the relationship between the concept of culture and the concept of civilization. |

Assessment criteria
Due to the form of instruction (lecture) and the size of the group, the evaluation will depend primarily on the result of the examination test verifying knowledge and skills. However, the following will also be taken into account: the students' preparation for classes (reading of the indicated texts) and their activity (participation in the discussion) during the lecture, which will allow the teacher to selectively, but more accurately assess the understanding of the knowledge acquired by the students.
The final grade for the course consists of: active participation in class, final exam (in written form)
