Introduction to the history and theory of translation studies: basic concepts, directions and history of translation studies.

The introduction covers the following areas:
1. Translation as a scientific discipline (scope and subject of translation studies, historical background of translation research, current translation research. History of translation and knowledge about translation: literalness vs. adaptation; personal opinion vs. scientific knowledge; equivalence and adequacy, verbum pro verbo Cicero translation to Schleiermacher
2. Key concepts of translation studies (the concept of meaning / meaning in translation, equivalence and its types, the concept of translation fidelity, translation universals).

Introduction to the history and theory of translation studies: basic concepts, ideas, trends and history of translation studies. The introduction covers the following topics:
1. Translation studies as a scientific discipline (scope and object of translation studies, historical outline of translation studies, translation research. The history of translation and translation studies: between literalism and adaptation; between personal opinion and scientific knowledge; from equivalence to adequacy, from verbum pro verbo translation by Cicero to Schleiermacher. Research methods used in translation studies.
2. key concepts of translation studies (the notion of sense/meaning in translation, equivalence and its types, the notion of translation fidelity, translation universals).
3. Translation strategies versus translation techniques: definition, conceptual scope, typology of translation techniques, norms and conventions, research methodology.
4. Selected translation concepts and theories (linguistic schools of translation (Jakobson, Nida, Albrecht), Leipzig school (Kade, Jäger, Neubert), functionalist theories - scopos theory (Vermeer, Reiß), interpretative theory of translation - semantic approach, hermeneutics (Frank, Paepcke, Stolze), Polysystems theory (Zohar), communication theories, the notion of equivalence and translation (Nida, Taber, Koller), structuralism vs. cognitivism in translation studies (Krings, Hönig, Kußmaul, Tabakowska), Sapir's / Whorf's relativist hypothesis vs. concepts of translation as cultural transfer and other selected translation concepts).

6. The concept of translation and meaning. Types of translation:
- oral translation versus written translation,
- Types of translation: translation of literary texts (prose, poetry, song), specialist texts, applied texts,
- interpreting: simultaneous, consecutive interpreting, basic concepts, terms, definitions and classifications - such as décalage, anticipation, reformulation, control, correction, notation, long- and short-term memory, languages A, B and C, relay,
- specificities of audiovisual translation,
- environmental translation.
7 The translator's role in translation theory and practice: his/her competences (linguistic, cultural, interpersonal),
functions, responsibilities, translator-reader, translator-author, translator-mediator. The translator's competence and responsibility. Translator's autonomy and creativity.
Translation as interlingual transfer and an act of intercultural communication. Translation and culture. Translation as a transfer of language, knowledge or culture? The linguistic image of the world and cultural specificity in translation.
10. The problem of translation quality and its evaluation: characteristics of the criteria of translation evaluation depending on the types of translation. 11.
11. Text types and genres. Specificity of literary translation. Specificity of specialist text translation, terminological, linguistic and content-related problems.
12. translator's workshop, working methods and tools supporting the work of a translator (specificity of cabin translation, computer assisted translation, automatic translation).
