Introduction to the history and theory of translation studies: basic concepts, directions and history of translation studies.
The introduction covers the following areas:
1. Translation as a scientific discipline (scope and subject of translation studies, historical background of translation research, current translation research. History of translation and knowledge about translation: literalness vs. adaptation; personal opinion vs. scientific knowledge; equivalence and adequacy, verbum pro verbo Cicero translation to Schleiermacher
2. Key concepts of translation studies (the concept of meaning / meaning in translation, equivalence and its types, the concept of translation fidelity, translation universals).

Learning outcomes
The student has an in-depth knowledge of the terminology in the field of translation studies, the main trends and directions of development, research methodology, the latest achievements and contemporary achievements of translation studies. The student is able to use and apply in practice the acquired and well-established theoretical knowledge as well as fluently use the terminology and research paradigms of translation studies.
KNOWLEDGE
After completing the course, the student:
- has a basic knowledge of the place and importance of translation studies in the system of sciences, and understands its specificity K1_W01;
- knows the basic terminology in the field of translation studies, K1_W02;
- knows at an advanced level the stages of development of translation studies as a field of knowledge in historical terms, understands the complex nature of translation as well as its complexity and historical variability K1_W03;
- has general knowledge of the theory and methodology in the field of translation studies K1_W05;
- knows and understands the relationship of translation studies with other fields of science and scientific disciplines K1_W06;
- knows and understands cultural differences which are an important factor in the formation of multicultural societies in the modern world, knows the general socio-economic and legal reality in areas related to the studied languages K1_W11;
- knows and understands the rules of professional ethics K1_W13;
- knows the standards, procedures, and good practices used in the area of professional activity K1_W15.
SKILLS:
After completing the course, the student:
- has elementary research skills, can formulate research problems and can use research tools in translation; is able to select appropriate methods to solve problems within the K1_U02 translation study;
- has the ability to argue using the views of other authors and independently formulate conclusions in the oral and written form K1_U04;
- can properly apply theoretical knowledge in the field of translation studies in typical professional situations, including team and interdisciplinary projects K1_U10.
SOCIAL COMPETENCE
After completing the course, the student:
- is ready to adequately identify and resolve dilemmas of inter-linguistic communication, especially translation dilemmas caused by asymmetry of linguistic systems and cultural differences, observing ethical behavior patterns and consulting experts K1_K01;
- is ready to critically assess their own knowledge of translation studies, appreciates the importance of substantive argumentation in solving research and practical problems (in professional situations) K1_K02.
Specialization effects: S_W14; S_W15, S_U12, S_U14, S_K08, S_K09. Namely:
- knows the basic terminology of translation theory and translation methods,
- has structured theoretical knowledge about the translation process, including specialist translation, its types and specificities, knows the basic translation techniques,
- has basic research skills in the field of textual linguistics; recognizes the structure of the text and its situational and cultural conditions, is able to perform a multi-level analysis of a text with an average degree of terminologization,
- can use and properly apply (general and detailed) translation strategies and techniques in specialist translation and interpretation from a foreign language into Polish (and vice versa),
- understands the need to improve the translators' skills throughout their lives,
- correctly identifies and resolves dilemmas related to the profession of a translator and interpreter.
Assessment criteria
Credit based on attendance and activity in class, tests, as well as individual papers and projects.
It is possible to receive credit if you are present for 26 hours of classes.
Possibility to miss two classes without the need to justify and make up for it. Each subsequent absence requires making up (the manner and scope are determined individually).
