Nowadays most people in the world use more than one language. Individual bi-/multilingualism is characterised by psycholinguistic processes which are different from those taking place in a monolingual mind (the most frequently studied processes are cross-linguistic influences and conceptual transfer). These processes can be studied by observing and analysing language comprehension and production of speech or written language, foreign language learning processes, child language acquisition, language disorders, verbal, paraverbal and nonverbal means of communication, and even cognitive and affective processes. In our seminar you will conduct a study with bi-/multilingual people (children, teenagers or adults, at different levels of language proficiency, representing different types of bi-/multilingualism and speaking different languages), aiming at providing an insight into chosen psycholinguistic processes underlying language use. You will also come up with some didactic implications of the obtained results.
The MA seminar aims at:
- in the first semester: (1) introducing students to the topic of "Psycholinguistic aspects of bi-/mulilingualism and their didactic implications"; (2) presenting the methodology of psycholinguistic research; (3) presentation of exemplary psycholinguistic research studies (research publications); (4) discussion of potential topics of MA dissertations; (5) preparation for reading relevant literature, conducting a research study and writing the MA dissertation;
- in the second semester: (1) appropriately directing students towards empirical research; (2) aiding them in writing the theoretical chapter of the dissertation;
- in the third semester: (1) supporting students in conducting their own research; (2) aiding them in writing the next chapter;
- in the fourth semester: aiding students in writing and completing their dissertation.
