History of the Russian Literature part 2 340-RK1-2HLR
The basic aim of this course is to teach students the history of Russian literature (from the 1840s to the end of the 19th century) and the main problems of its particular developmental stages. Students study cultural, philosophical and aesthetic contexts as well as political and social aspects. Moreover, they learn the skill of proper interpretation of literary texts.

Learning outcomes: the knowledge of the most important literary works, critical studies and monographs. In addition, reading original literary texts will help students to improve their
language skills.
Topics (sem. I and II):
- The periodisation of the Russian literature of the second half of the 19th centry. General characteristics of the 1840s. Change of generations and the so-called "creative pause". Anti-Romantic opposition. Slavophiles and Occidentalists - the essence of ideological dispute.
- W. Bieliński's activity and his conception of realism. "Natural school"- its chronological limits, topical plots and poetics.
- Alexander Herzen - his political and literary activities. "Russian socialism" of the writer.
- Biography and works of Ivan Turgenev.
- Characteristics of the 1860s of the 19th century. The dispute of liberals and democrats. The birth of the Razninsky intelligentsia. Ideological discussions around
"Sovriemennik" and "Otieczestwienny zapiski". The development of Russian journalism in the second half of the 19th century.
- Biography and literary activity of F. Tyutchev. "Tiutchev's school" in poetry.
- Development of the main trends in Russian poetry of the 1840s and 1860s (anthology and Slavophile poetry, "Lermont school", "pure poetry" and "democratic" poetry).
- Biography and literary activity of A. Fet and M. Nekrasov.
- Philosophical and aesthetic criticism of N. Chernyshevsky, N. Dobrolubov and D. Pisariev`s democratic movement.
- Activities, philosophical and aesthetic views of liberal Russian critics: V. Botkin, A. Druzhinin and P. Annienkov.
- Fiction writers of the 1960s and 1970s.
- Nationalist movement: P. Lavrov and M. Mikhailvsky. The prose of Gleb Uspenski.
- A. Ostrovsky and the development of Russian drama.
- M. Saltykov-Shchedrin`s literary works
- F. Dostoevsky`s early literary works
- F. Dostoyevsky - search for an ethical ideal
- F. Dostoevsky - philosophical and religious problems.
- Early works of L. Tolstoy.
- "Happy 15 Years" of L. Tolstoy. Tolstoism.
- Literary works of M. Leskov.
- Characteristics of the years 1881-1895. The twilight of revolutionary nationalism and offensive reaction. The Russian intelligentsia and its role in society. "The theory of small deeds".

- Poetry of the 80's. S. Nadson and K. Fofanov.
- A. Chekhov - a novelist.
- A. Chekhov and in the development of the Russian theatre.

Assessment criteria
The course ends with a credit after winter and summer semesters. The assessment is based on student's preparation for classes, written work, knowledge of selected literature.
Attendance is obligatory. In the case of absence due to illness, a student is obliged to submit a medical certificate within 7 days after the end of the sick leave. Missing more than 5 classes in a semester results in failing to obtain a credit.
