Term 2022:

Introduction
1. History of the Russian language as a subject of teaching, its goals and relation to other disciplines of linguistics.
2. The Russian language in the Indo-European family of languages.
3. The relation of the Old Russian language to the Old Church Slavonic language.
4. The periodization of the Russian language.
5. The pre-literary period in the history of the Russian language - the beginnings of the formation of the Old Russian language (changes in the syllable structure, the disapperance of j before е, у, the monophthongization of diphthongs and diphthong combinations, the first, second and third palatalization of * k, * g, * x, iotacization of consonants, simplifications and dissimilations of consonant groups).
The literate period in the history of the Russian language
I. Old Russian period (древнерусский) - 10th – 14th centuries
1. Literature and culture of Kievan Rus (for self- study).
2. The linguistic situation in Kievan Rus (for self-study).
3. Phonetic system:
- history of the yers,
- phonetic changes caused by the disappearance and vocalization of the yers.
4. Morphological system:
- recomposition of noun paradigms and grammatical categories,
- historical changes in the inflection of pronouns,
- transformations in the inflection of the Old Russian adjective,
- evolution of verb and gerund forms (adjectival participles, formation of adverbial participles) and grammatical categories.
II. Great Russian period (великорусский) - 15th – 16th centuries
1. The linguistic situation of Moscow Ruthenia (for self-study).
2. Changes in the phonetic system.
3. Changes in the morphological system.
4. Selected features of the syntax of the Old Russian language.

Prerequisites (description)

Knowledge of the subject and methodological specificity of the humanities in the field of a selected specialization.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is able to:
- describe the history of the Russian language as a language system and communication tool (KA6_WG1, KA6_WG2, KA6_WG4, KA6_WG9);
- use the basic notions of the history of language and formulate statements on historical and linguistic issues (KA6_WG4, KA6_UK4, KA6_UW1);
- analyze Old Russian texts as products of culture (KA6_WG9, KA6_UW1, KA6_WG7, KA6_UW2, KA6_UW7);
- interpret contemporary linguistic phenomena taking into account the historical background (KA6_WG5, KA6_WK1, KA6_UK4);
- search for, analyze, select and use information, taking into account various sources and methods (KA6_UW7, KA6_UO1);
- make people aware of the need to constantly observe the language in terms of its changes (KA6_UU1, KA6_KK1, KA6_KK2).

Assessment criteria

Teaching methods: expository method (elements of a lecture conducted with the use of Power Point presentations, explanation), practical activities, problem solving tasks (activation).
Requirements for obtaining a credit for the course: active participation in classes; written tasks and text analysis at the end of the course cycle. One absence is allowed; students who are absent more than once are required to pass the material covered in these classes during the tutor`s office hours. The number of absences qualifying for failing the course: 10.
Final form of verification of learning outcomes: getting a credit (analysis of phonetic and morphological phenomena of the Old Russian language documented in selected texts).
Form of classes - mixed (lectures - online, classes - in the classroom).
