This course is an introduction to the field, principles, and concepts of interpersonal communication, including an analysis of its functional and dysfunctional patterns.
Topics explored in this course include basic concepts of interpersonal communication and interpersonal communication competence, as well as functional and dysfunctional communication patterns. The course helps students to practice verbal and nonverbal skills, as well as improve their emotion management and conflict management skills.
Dysfunctional communication patterns shall be discussed using transactional analysis so that the students can relate to common real life situations – both private and study or work-related – during which communication proves ineffective, is inhibited or otherwise suppressed.

If a student is absent from more than 50% of classes without a valid excuse (medical certificate or dean’s approval), they may not be admitted to the course credit or exam, which results in having to repeat the course in the following academic year.

Classes, consultations, and assessments may be conducted in an online format. The primary platform used for classes is the one recommended at a given time by UwB. A student participating in online classes should have access to a computer with an Internet connection.
Students with special educational needs may contact the course instructor in order to adapt teaching methods and assessment requirements to their needs. Such students are obliged to inform the instructor of their needs no later than two weeks from the start of the course. Classes are conducted in accordance with the principles of universal design.
