Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
1. By completing the study course and successfully passing the case commentary and long essay, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge and an understanding of the basic concepts and principles at issue in contemporary legal philosophy (critical and Anglo-American traditions).
2. Understand law as an instrument of politics and ideology.
3. Understand how theory and practice and law inform one another and vice versa.
Skills:
4. Demonstrate a capacity to apply basic concepts of legal philosophy to contemporary contexts and debates.
5. 2) Demonstrate a sociological, historical and political perspective towards claims about law's objectivity, neutrality and law’s relationship (or not) with morality.
6. Demonstrate a sustained critical analysis of a legal issue in writing.
Competencies:
7. Research a legal issue to find relevant principles and concepts, and to investigate those principles and concepts critically and analytically.
8. Work independently in pursuit of a research and composition assignment.
9. Use library and web resources, including journal articles, to research an issue.
Assessment criteria
Participation in class discussion (lectures) - 30%
Final examination: essay (2000 words) - 70%
1) Students are expected to attend the lectures (attendance is compulsory). Students are required to fill out the self-assessment report.
2) They are expected to come prepared to the lectures (read assigned texts).
3) As such, students are expected to work independently.
4) Preparation for the classes and answering the questions, will ensure that students are in a good position to apply the notions and concepts of legal philosophy in class discussion and in the long essay.
