Plant physiology and secret life of crop plants 290-KO3-4PPSL
Teaching hours: 15 hours of seminar/conversation class
Teaching methods: student-activating discussion class (in a lecture room), elements of lecture, discussion, consultations
Conversation topics:
1. The history of research on the functioning of cultivated plants, first experimental experiments. Definition of plant physiology, goals as a discipline and subject of study, university teaching traditions. Plant cells and tissues and understanding their functions.
2. The process of photosynthesis – definition, stages, cellular location, chloroplast structure. The importance of photosynthesis in the ecosystem, in plant and human life. Possibilities and methods of modifying photosynthesis to increase the productivity and yields of cultivated plants.
3. Mineral nutrition of plants. Functions of macro- and micronutrients. Uptake and transport of minerals – briefly, using phosphorus and nitrogen as examples. Possibilities of improving the availability and uptake of minerals from the soil.
4. Transport processes in plant tissues. Transport pathways and carriers involved in the transport of water, photoassimilates, and minerals in plants.
5. Medicinal plants - selected examples. Crop plants and ensuring global food security. The importance of genetically modified plants in cultivation.
