Religion and Modernity. Theories of Secularisation 440-ERS-1RAM
The aim of the course is to provide students with an overall understanding of the relationship between modernity and religion, which is recognised in the social sciences as the theory/paradigm of secularisation. It has dominated in the sociology of religion for decades, but now it has been increasingly criticised.
In class, we will analyse texts presenting classical forms of secularisation theory (Berger) until the crisis and the emergence of new theoretical proposals – theory of religious economy (Stark), post-secularism (Habermas) or deprivatization of religion (Casanova).
