Borderland Studies 480-ERS-1BOS
The course “Sociology of Borderlands” introduces students to the social, cultural, and symbolic dimensions of borderland regions—understood as geographical, social, and cultural spaces. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with key literature on borderlands as spaces of dialogue, negotiation, hybridity, as well as conflict and identity tensions.

Przedmiot dotyczy kategorii pogranicza narodowego i cywilizacyjnego, a także granicy, zarówno w ujęciu formalnoprawnym (Ustawa z dnia 12 października 1990 r. o ochronie granicy państwowej, Dz. U. 1990 Nr 78 poz. 461), jak i w szerszym rozumieniu, które przyjęte jest – w różnych wersjach – na użytek socjologii, kulturoznawstwa, antropologii kulturowej i in. Na zajęciach studenci zapoznają się z funkcjami granic, analizują oraz prowadzą dyskusję na temat zmienności tychże funkcji w zależności od systemu politycznego, a także zagadnień politycznych, kulturowych, w tym tożsamościowych, językowych itd. oraz społecznych związanych z granicą i pograniczem. |

Student:
- knows and understands the definitions of the most important sociological terms, can identify specific problems undertaken by sociology (KP6_WG1)
- is able to identify social problems of a selected community / social group and analyse, evaluate and propose solutions (KP6_UW8)
- is determined to improve his/her social skills (KP6_KO1)

Assessment criteria: attendance, active participation in course (and adequate preparation for classes), preparation of individual or group
