The course tells the story of capitalism: the social system in which we live. We begin with the origins of the system. Is capitalism a secular extension of Protestantism or Judaism (Weber, Sombart)? What is primary accumulation (Marx)? We further touch on the historical phases the system went through (Jameson). What happened to capitalism under the influence of the countercultural revolution of the 1960s (Marcuse)? Why did the Internet also change almost everything for capitalism? Can capitalism be replaced by something (Boltanski)? Why do we need economic growth (Bataille)? What effect do the inequalities created by capitalism have on us? We end with a trip to the future and a consideration of the metaphysical sense of the capitalist economy (Lyotard). |
