Specjalistyczny warsztat językowy 520-KS2-1SWJ
Study profile: general academic.
Mode of study: full-time.
Course type: compulsory.
Field: humanities.
Program: cultural studies, second-cycle studies, year I, winter semester.
Discipline: cultural and religious studies. Teaching format: practical workshop, 30 contact hours.
Language of instruction: English. ECTS credits: 5.
The workshop develops English for work with culture: reading, interpreting works, discussing ideas, presenting findings and preparing short texts for specified audiences. Language development is combined with critical reflection on cultural-studies concepts and questions. Sources include academic and accessible cultural writing, film, visual art and performance, and statements by artists and cultural institutions. A coherent thematic program is specified separately for each teaching cycle.
Students learn to find and evaluate sources, recognize contexts, explain specialist concepts, formulate questions and arguments, compare interpretations, and respond to other participants. Attention is given to meaning, register, genre, textual purpose and cultural differences. Tasks include individual and collaborative translation of short texts, comparison of solutions and revision after feedback. Translation direction and difficulty follow the task’s purpose; students without Polish are provided with equivalent English mediation or adaptation tasks.
Classes are practical and conversational. Students prepare assigned materials, maintain a working terminology resource, use sources responsibly and collaborate. Assessment considers linguistic and conceptual achievement, understanding of the work undertaken, and the ability to justify a consequential choice.
Student workload: classes - 30 hours; independent preparation, reading, viewing, tasks and assessment preparation - 85 hours; consultations - 10 hours. Total: 125 hours, 5 ECTS.
Entry requirement: English at B1 level. Teaching methods include whole-class work, individual tasks, pair and group work, discussion, short presentations, and language, translation and mediation exercises with feedback.
Workload indicators: direct participation of the instructor, 40 hours (1.6 ECTS); independent study, 85 hours (3.4 ECTS). Assessment: graded course credit.
