History of the English Language II 340-AS1-3SHELs
The course takes 30 hours. It aims at systematizing students' knowledge concerning the history of English and encouraging them to deepen their knowledge concerning those areas in English history which they find particularly interesting. The classes involve text analysis (Old English texts, Middle English texts, Early Modern English texts) and the translation of the analysed texts into present-day English. The analyses will be conducted with reference to the historical, social, cultural and linguistic background of the period in which they were produced. Additionally, students are expected to prepare presentations on topics pertaining to the history of English that are of interest to them.

Learning outcomes
1) Students have a systematized knowledge of the major linguistic changes that took place in English in different historical periods.
2) Students are able to analysed short texts.
3) Students are able to prepare a presentation on a topic in the history of English that interests them.
4) Students are able to work in groups and participate in discussions.
5) Students are able to take responsibility for the tasks they have been assigned and do their tasks in a timely manner.
Assessment criteria
The final grade is based on:
- written work done in class: an analysis of a historical text
- presentation in class on a topic related to the history of English and its regional varieties
- participation in classes
