This course explores the phenomenon of global English in the contemporary world. Students will explore the diverse varieties of English used in different regions of the world and their social, cultural, and political significance. Topics covered include: English as a language of global communication, English as a language of power and prestige, processes of glocalization, and the role of English in education, media, and business. Students will analyze authentic materials (e.g., recordings, media texts, examples of public discourse) to understand how different varieties of English reflect identity, social inequalities, and core-periphery relations. The course encourages critical reflection on the concept of "standard" English and the implications of the spread of English for other languages and cultures. |
