The topic of the seminar is defining the concept of "self and stranger" in European culture. This issue will be considered from a historical and contemporary perspective. Defining this problem in the context of the changing national-ethnic structure of individual European countries is important in shaping their identity. During the classes, the issue of the place of culture of emigrants from non-European areas and its role in the everyday life of Europeans will be discussed.
Nowadays, the word "foreignness" has a pejorative tinge. In common understanding, it is associated with something unknown, dangerous and hostile. History knows many examples when ethnic, cultural or religious differences were the reason for mass murders and persecutions. What is different has always aroused fear and anxiety in people. The issue of familiarity and foreignness occupies an important place in various trends in sociological thought. This is due to the fact that the tension between familiarity and foreignness is an essential component of the processes taking place in the emotional and intellectual sphere.
Europeans did not take into account that the inhabitants of another continent could be the same people as themselves. The Eurocentrism rooted in the newcomers did not allow them to accept the fact that completely different patterns of behavior may exist somewhere in the world. In the eyes of Europeans, due to their ethnic and cultural differences, the newcomers were strangers. In the opinion of Europeans themselves, not all citizens living on the continent are their own and a significant part of them are foreigners, even though they live and work among them.
